Introduction
Arepas de Queso are one of the most beloved Colombian street foods. These warm, cheesy corn cakes are soft, satisfying, and incredibly easy to make. Whether served for breakfast with hot chocolate or as a side for dinner, they bring a taste of Colombia straight to your kitchen.
Ingredients):
- 2 cups pre-cooked cornmeal (Harina PAN or Masarepa)
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or queso fresco
- 1 tbsp butter (plus more for cooking)
- ½ tsp salt
Instructions):
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, salt, and butter. Stir until butter melts.
- Gradually add the cornmeal, mixing with your hands until a dough forms.
- Add the cheese and knead until well combined. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
- Form small balls, then flatten into discs about 1 cm thick.
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and grease with butter.
- Cook arepas for 4–5 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.
- Serve warm with butter, cheese, or eggs on the side.
